San Francisco School Admissions: What Has Changed for 2027-28

The Bay Area offers families an unusually rich choice of schools, and an admissions calendar that shifts from one year to the next. Here is what has changed heading into the 2027-28 cycle, so you can plan your family’s search with confidence.
Families arriving in the Bay Area are usually well informed by the time they reach us. They have read the guides, spoken with colleagues, and formed a picture of how admissions work here. What tends to surprise them is how quickly that picture changes.
A few things are genuinely different this cycle, and they are worth understanding early. Our consultants work across San Francisco, the Peninsula, the South Bay, the East Bay and Marin, and this is the ground we tend to cover in a first conversation. If you would like a fuller view of the region, our page on school options across San Francisco and the Bay Area is a good place to begin.
Where the Zone-Based Assignment Policy Stands
You may have read that San Francisco is moving toward assigning elementary places closer to home. The Board of Education approved a zone-based framework in December 2020, and it was originally intended to take effect for the 2026-27 school year.
That timeline has since moved, and the shape of the policy has moved with it. On October 13, 2026 the Board of Education voted to direct staff to develop a neighborhood-based assignment system for elementary schools, in which a family’s home address would secure a place at a school nearby, with citywide programs still open to apply to. At the time of writing, a draft is expected at the board in March 2027 and a final vote is scheduled for April 13, 2027. The system would first apply to children enrolling for 2028-29, who apply in the fall of 2027.
For a family arriving now, this is steadying rather than unsettling news. The 2027-28 round runs on the citywide choice system just as recent years have, so it is a known quantity, well documented, and the one to plan around this year. Children already enrolled keep their places when the new system arrives.
The Admissions Calendar for 2027-28
At the time of writing, the San Francisco Unified application for the 2027-28 school year opens on October 23, 2026, with the main round closing on February 1, 2027. Assignment letters are mailed in the week of March 15, 2027, and open enrollment for schools with remaining seats begins on April 26, 2027. Families apply once, ranking schools in order of preference.
Independent schools across the Bay Area keep their own calendar. At the time of writing, their deadlines for fall 2027 entry run from the middle of December through the middle of January, with decisions arriving in March. Each school sets its own date and moves it a little from year to year, so it is worth confirming each one directly, and reading them alongside SFUSD’s published key dates as the round approaches. The main round is the moment that shapes a family’s options, and it arrives earlier than most families expect.
How the Attendance Area Tiebreaker Works
Living within an attendance area gives a child a tiebreaker at that school, which improves the odds without reserving a place. That is how it works for the 2027-28 round, and the district is clear on the point. It is a distinction worth understanding early, because housing and school decisions are closely linked here and families often make them in that order.
Children living on the same street can end up at different schools. That is simply how a choice-based system works, and knowing it in advance turns it from a surprise into a planning consideration. It is also the part of the system the October 2026 vote is meant to change from 2028-29 onward, so a family planning a longer stay may find it useful to hold both pictures in mind.
A Landscape That Keeps Developing
The map here continues to change, often in welcome ways. A new public elementary school opened in the Mission Bay neighborhood in August 2026, the first the district had opened in roughly two decades at the time of writing. Following the October vote, staff will redraw attendance boundaries, review how full each school is, and look again at where citywide programs sit. The closure discussions that unsettled families a couple of years ago have not concluded, and because a new enrollment system needs to be in place first, any closures are still not expected before 2029-30.
The practical implication is a straightforward one. Local knowledge in this region has a shelf life, and a current picture is worth more than one formed a year or two ago.
Five Regions, Five Distinct School Systems
San Francisco, the Peninsula, the South Bay, the East Bay and Marin each run on their own admissions logic, and the commute between them shapes what is realistic as much as the map does. A family weighing Palo Alto against Marin is really weighing two different school searches rather than two addresses.
This is the thing arriving families find most surprising about the region, and it is usually the most useful place to start. Our Bay Area consultants explore it in more detail in an interview on finding the right school in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Where to Begin
Two things tend to help most. Starting earlier than feels necessary is the first, since the SFUSD round closes in early February and independent school deadlines fall between the middle of December and the middle of January, which puts the decisions that matter in the fall. Settling on a region before falling for a particular school is the second, because the region shapes which searches are open at all.
If your child has additional needs, it is worth allowing more time again. Understanding how a district or an independent school would respond to evaluations a family already holds takes longer than a straightforward search, and it is a conversation best had before signing a lease.
