Education Support in Hong Kong

Choosing Your Child's Best-Fit School with a Trusted Education Consultant in Hong Kong

Fifty-three international schools, an admissions calendar that runs a year ahead, and a few schools so sought-after that timing and fit matter more than ever.

Hong Kong offers relocating families one of the widest choices of schools anywhere: British, American, Canadian, Australian and International Baccalaureate programs, national schools from France to Japan, English and Mandarin bilingual schools, and a large local system of government, aided and Direct Subsidy Scheme schools. Our Hong Kong education consultants help families understand those choices and find the school that fits their child.

Two things surprise many families. The first is the calendar: international schools start in August, and the main application rounds close as early as September of the year before, so a school search often needs to begin before the move is confirmed. The second is how much competition is concentrated on a small number of schools, while there are good places elsewhere for families who know where to look.

Whether you are deciding between English-medium and bilingual schools, working out which neighborhoods make sense for the schools you like, or trying to understand debentures and waiting lists, our consultants in Hong Kong turn the options into clear next steps.

    How We Help

The Question Behind Every Hong Kong School Search

How Hard Is It to Get Into an International School in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong has 53 international schools with about 48,400 places, and in 2025/26 about 92% of those places were filled. Since the pandemic, the families filling them have changed: many expatriate families left, and many new arrivals have come through Hong Kong’s talent schemes and plan to stay. Fewer places open up during the year as a result, and demand is concentrated on a small number of well-known schools.

The good news is that there are enough places across the sector, and the general quality of Hong Kong’s international schools is high. Many schools that are less in demand are less known for reasons such as a short track record or a less central location, not the quality of their teaching. As is the case in every city, the best-known schools are not automatically the best fit for every child, and knowing how to make a good match is extremely important.

That local reality is exactly what our Hong Kong education consultants help families work through every week.

Here are the considerations that shape most decisions:

Apply by September, a Year Ahead

International schools in Hong Kong start their school year in August, and their main application rounds open in the year before entry. Several large school groups close their main round at the end of September, and others close in October or November. Families who apply after the main rounds still have options, but fewer, so we recommend having applications in by September of the year before your child starts.

Debentures Give Priority, Not a Place

Many schools raise capital through debentures, nomination rights or capital levies, each approved by the Education Bureau. A debenture or nomination right, bought by a family or an employer, moves a child up the list for a place, but it does not create a place or replace the school’s assessment, and most students attend without one.

Entry Years Decide Where the Places Are

Places open up most in a school’s entry years: the first year of school, at around age three, four or five depending on the school, and the first year of secondary, around age eleven. In other years a place depends on a family leaving, and families now move on less often, so a late arrival may start at a transitional school, which many families end up happy to stay in.

The School Year Starts in August

The international school year runs from August to June, while local schools start in September. Mid-year places do come up, but they depend on other families leaving, so a January start is less predictable than an August one. Children are placed by age, and year labels differ between school systems, so we map your child’s date of birth to each school’s year groups.

    English, Mandarin or Bilingual

Most local schools teach in Cantonese, while international schools teach mainly in English, and almost all offer Mandarin as a subject. English and Mandarin bilingual programs are growing fast, and a couple of established bilingual schools are in very high demand. The right choice depends on your child’s age, their languages, and how long you expect to stay.

Find the School Before the Flat

Many of the international schools that suit relocating families are on Hong Kong Island, but there are strong options in Kowloon and the New Territories too. Places are not tied to your address, so we recommend securing a school, or good alternatives, before you sign a lease. Most schools run bus routes through private operators, and living near the school makes every school day easier.

    Inside the Hong Kong System

Education Consultants Who Know Hong Kong Schools

Our Hong Kong education consultants know the schools of interest to incoming families: which have earned their reputation, which will best support a child who is new to the language of instruction, which are known for academic rigor, and where the newer and quieter campuses are that families never hear about in a first search. They take the time to understand who your child is and what kind of school you’re looking for, and they recommend schools they believe will be a fit for your child; their starting point is your child, not a list of school names. What they contribute to your school search:

School Fluency: Extensive knowledge of Hong Kong’s international, bilingual, Direct Subsidy Scheme and local schools, what each one offers, and the curriculum and language each one teaches.

School Relationships: Professional relationships with admissions teams at international and private schools across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, and an understanding of which school will be a good fit for a specific student.

Admissions Know-How: The ability to support your application process with a realistic school list, complete applications, assessment and interview preparation, and advice on debentures and waiting lists.

Special Education Needs Expertise: Consultants who are specialists in neurodiversity and work alongside our Hong Kong experts, ensuring that a school can meet a child’s needs.

Neighborhood Insight: Practical guidance on commutes, bus routes and the areas that put the schools you like within easy reach, so the school and the housing decisions can be made together.

Because Bennett is fully independent and never affiliated with any school, our advice stays focused on one thing: where your child will do well.

    Our Hong Kong Services

Support at Every Stage, from Preschool to University

From helping you choose a first kindergarten to guiding you through university applications, our Hong Kong consultants support your family at every stage. Every service is customized to your family’s situation, timeline and goals.

    International School Placement

We help you decide which of Hong Kong’s international and private schools could be a fit for your child, build a balanced list that is realistic for your child’s year group, and liaise directly with admissions teams on your behalf.

    Local and DSS School Guidance

Children on dependant visas can attend Hong Kong’s government and aided schools free of charge. If a local or Direct Subsidy Scheme school is the right choice, we explain how Primary One and secondary places are allocated, what the language of instruction will mean for your child, and how your address affects your options.

    Curriculum and Language Guidance

We help families choose between British, American, IB and national curricula, and between English-medium and bilingual programs, thinking about how long you expect to stay, where you may go next and what kind of learner your child is.

    Kindergarten and Early Years Placement

We help you choose between local kindergartens, international preschools and the early years sections of through-train schools, explain the K1 admissions calendar, and plan ahead for the primary school entry year that matters most.

    Special Education Needs Support

Support for students with additional learning needs is available in Hong Kong’s local and international schools, but it varies a great deal from school to school, and early disclosure matters. When placing a neurodiverse child, we pair our consultant with a Bennett SEN expert, review the reports you already have, and recommend schools whose support fits your child’s needs.

    Application and Assessment Support

Each school has its own application requirements, deadlines and assessments. We keep your calendar on track, help you prepare complete applications, ready your child for assessments and your family for interviews, and advise on application fees, debentures, waiting lists and backup options.

    Mid-Year and Late Arrival Support

Arriving in January, or after the main rounds have closed? We look for schools with space in your child’s year group, including schools with rolling admissions, and if a transitional school is the right first step, we help you choose one your child will be happy in.

    University Counseling

Students from Hong Kong’s international schools go on to universities in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and beyond. We help students understand the route to each option, since the longer-range plan often determines school choice in the immediate term.

    Education Advisory Session

A focused, one-hour consultation for families with specific questions about schooling in Hong Kong. Fees can be credited toward a comprehensive placement engagement.

Every service is customized to your family’s situation, timeline, and goals.

      Your Questions Answered

      Hong Kong Schools, Explained

Moving into an unfamiliar school system raises the same questions again and again. Here are the ones families ask us most often about Hong Kong.

How hard is it to get into an international school in Hong Kong?

It depends on the school and the year group. Across the sector there are some spare places: in 2025/26 Hong Kong’s 53 international schools had about 48,400 places and about 44,700 students. Demand is concentrated on a small number of well-known schools, though, which run waiting lists in every year group, and fewer families leave mid-year than in the past. Applying on time, to a balanced list of schools that fit your child, makes the biggest difference. Hong Kong International School Waiting Lists explains more.

As early as you can. Most international schools start in August, and their main application rounds close between the end of September and November of the year before entry, so for an August 2027 start we recommend applying by September 2026. Some schools accept applications on a rolling basis, which helps families who decide late. When to Apply to International Schools in Hong Kong has the details.

No. Most students attend Hong Kong’s international schools without one. A debenture or nomination right, bought by a family or an employer, gives a child priority for a place, but it does not create a place and the child must still meet the school’s admission requirements. Individual debentures commonly cost from around HK$120,000 to HK$1 million. School Debentures in Hong Kong explains how they work.

It depends on your child’s age. Young children usually join a short, play-based group session where teachers observe how they communicate and get along with others. Older children typically sit English and math assessments, and bilingual schools may assess Chinese too. Previous school reports and teacher references carry a lot of weight, and many schools can assess children online from overseas. Hong Kong International School Assessments goes further.

It depends on your child’s age, their languages and how long you expect to stay. English-medium schools are still the majority, and almost all teach Mandarin as a subject. English and Mandarin bilingual programs are growing, and suit many younger children and families for whom Chinese is a heritage language. English, Mandarin or Bilingual? looks at the choice in more depth.

Choose the school first. Many international families live on Hong Kong Island, in the Mid-Levels or on the Southside, and others in Kowloon Tong, Sai Kung, Clearwater Bay, Tseung Kwan O, Tai Po or Discovery Bay. Places at international schools are not tied to your address, so we recommend securing a school before signing a lease. Where to Live in Hong Kong With Children explains why.

Yes. Children who hold dependant visas, including the children of professionals who moved under the talent schemes, can attend government and aided schools, which offer 12 years of free education. Primary One places are allocated partly by school net, based on your home address. Most local schools teach in Cantonese, with extra support for non-Chinese-speaking students.

For a local kindergarten K1 place starting in September 2027, families apply for a Registration Certificate between September and November 2026, and kindergartens interview from November. International preschools and early years programs run their own admissions. Since kindergarten rarely leads directly into a primary school, plan for the primary entry year first. Kindergarten in Hong Kong has the details.
