Texas Education Freedom Accounts launched for 2026-27, offering families up to $10,474 a year toward private school tuition, and up to $30,000 for a child with a disability. Demand far outstripped the first year’s funding, with awards decided by lottery and priority tiers, so it is a factor to plan around rather than count on. Bennett families are already applying.

Moving into an unfamiliar school system raises a lot of questions. Here are the ones our education consultants in Dallas are asked most often by relocating and local families.
ISD stands for independent school district, and in Texas the word independent is literal. Districts are separate from any city or county government, must meet state criteria, and otherwise set their own policies, calendars and programs. The greater Dallas area has more than 80 of them, their boundaries ignore city limits, with some districts spanning several cities and two or three counties, and the district your address falls in decides your public school options. Confirm the ISD for a specific address before you commit to a home; the city name on the listing is not enough.
The best-known schools in the private school corridor are competitive, with application deadlines in the winter for the following August, entrance testing and interviews, and waiting lists in popular grades. But Dallas has a deep private sector well beyond the corridor, including many faith-based schools, and a family that starts early and looks past the same ten names usually has good options. Mid-year places depend on space, which is where knowing the admissions teams matters.
A stretch of North Dallas, running north from Preston Hollow, with an unusually high concentration of top-ranked private schools set among established residential neighborhoods. Many relocating families are drawn to it, and it is a real advantage to live near the school your child attends. It is also only part of the picture; excellent independent and faith-based schools sit across the metro.
It depends on the program and the district. Some magnet programs set grade and test-score thresholds and then run an on-campus assessment; some choice schools use a lottery; specialty programs inside a high school can be application-only. Applications for the following school year typically open in the fall and close in the winter, so a family arriving in spring has usually missed the main window for that year.
Education savings accounts that launched for the 2026-27 school year, worth $10,474 a year toward accredited private school tuition and expenses, and up to $30,000 for a child with a disability. The first round drew more than 274,000 applications for around 100,000 awards, allocated by lottery within priority tiers based on income and disability. Eligibility requires Texas residency, and no date has been announced for the next application window. Treat it as a possible bonus, not a budget line.
A child starts kindergarten in the school year in which they are five on or before September 1, and first grade the year they are six. Free public pre-K for four-year-olds is a safety net rather than a universal program: a child must meet one of the state’s criteria, such as limited English proficiency, economic disadvantage, foster care, or being the dependent of an active-duty service member or a public school teacher. Most relocating families do not qualify, although a child arriving without English sometimes does. Some districts sell any places left once the free class is filled, and the private preschool market is deep. School is compulsory from age six, so kindergarten itself is a choice in Texas, though nearly every child attends.
Strong public districts in the Dallas area run substantial special education departments, and a child arriving with an evaluation or an existing plan has access to those services once enrolled; the district builds its own plan after arrival. Dallas also has a number of excellent private schools and programs built around specific learning profiles.
