Education Support in Tokyo

Choosing Your Child's Best-Fit School with a Trusted Education Consultant in Tokyo

Fewer international schools than Singapore or Hong Kong, but a remarkably rich offering spread across a vast metropolitan area.

Tokyo international schools are an unusually varied group. Some date back to the early 1900s; others opened in the last few years. Between them they teach the International Baccalaureate, the British and American curricula, and national programs from France, Canada and India. The options include Montessori and Reggio Emilia-inspired settings for young children, several long-established single-sex schools, faith-based schools of different traditions, and a handful of newer schools with a focus on science, individualized learning or additional needs.

For most relocating families, an international school is the realistic choice. Japanese schools teach in Japanese and run from April to March, while most international schools start in August or September and English is the language of instruction. Japanese families returning from abroad may choose a different path, especially if the goal is for the student to reenter the Japanese system.

Whether you are weighing the IB against a British or American program, deciding between a central campus and a larger one further outside the city, or thinking about how an international school fits a Japanese child’s longer-term plans, our consultants turn your questions into clear next steps.

    How We Help

The Question Behind Every Tokyo School Search

How Do We Find an International School Place in Tokyo?

Tokyo’s international schools are spread across the greater metropolitan area, while relocating families tend to settle in a small number of residential neighborhoods. That combination shapes most searches: the schools within a reasonable commute of those neighborhoods are the ones most families apply to, and places there can be limited.

The good news is that Tokyo has many school options for international students: schools more than a century old and schools that opened recently; the IB alongside the national curriculum; faith-based and secular schools; and schools that are “international” but were founded primarily for local, Japanese students. Nearby Yokohama, around half an hour from central Tokyo by train, offers additional options, including the region’s German school and one of the oldest international schools in Asia. As is the case in every city, the best-known schools are not automatically a fit for every child, and knowing how to make a good match is extremely important.

That local reality is exactly what our Tokyo consultants help families work through every week.

Here are the considerations that shape most decisions:

Where You Live Shapes Which Schools Are Realistic

Many families initially plan on living in central Tokyo, and while the international schools are sprinkled across the greater metropolitan area, a fixed address can limit the accessibility of certain schools. Our advice is always, “choose the school first, and then your home,” because it enables families to decide the most important thing first.

Central Campuses Trade Space for Convenience

Space in central Tokyo is scarce, so campuses in the city center tend to be compact, some without a sports field of their own, while larger campuses with more extensive facilities sit further outside the city. For families living in the city center, this can mean a trade-off between a shorter school commute and more space, and families weigh it differently, often depending on the age and interests of their child.

The Name on the Gate Is Not the Whole Story

Tokyo’s international schools teach the IB, the British and American curricula, and national programs including French, Canadian and Indian. A name is not always a guide to who a school serves: some schools with “international” in the title enroll mostly Japanese students. Looking past the school’s name and understanding its curriculum and community is the first step in a good school search.

The Japanese School Year Starts in April

For families considering enrolling their child in a local school, it’s important to know that the Japanese school year runs from April to March. Most international schools start in August or September, although a few follow the April calendar. A family arriving in the spring is doing so at the start of the Japanese school year but partway through the international or northern hemisphere school year; this disjuncture in school calendars is something for families to understand in advance since it will affect their choices.

A Different Question for Japanese Families

For a Japanese child, the question of international school can be a complicated one. While it is legal for Japanese students to enroll in international schools, the Japanese education system does not always recognize years of international school for students rejoining the national system. Consequently, Japanese families considering a non-Japanese school for their child, whether or not they’re relocating or repatriating, should always be thinking about the long term.

Getting to School Is Part of Daily Life

Tokyo’s public transportation is safe and reliable, and this makes it easier to arrange a workable work-home-school commute for everyone in the family. Many international school students rely on public transportation, often traveling alone, and schools tend to offer limited, if any, bus service.

    Inside the Tokyo System

Consultants Who Know Tokyo Schools and Admissions

Our Tokyo consultants know the schools: which have earned their reputation, which suit a child who needs English-language support, which will stretch a strong student, and where the quieter campuses are that families never hear about in a first search. They take the time to understand who your child is and what kind of school you’re looking for, and they recommend schools they believe will be a fit for your child; their starting point is your child, not a list of school names.

Because Bennett is fully independent and never affiliated with any school, our advice stays focused on one thing: where your child will do well.

School Fluency: Extensive knowledge of Tokyo’s international schools, their curricula and accreditation, and what each one offers.

Admissions Relationships: Professional relationships with admissions teams across the city, and an understanding of which school will be a match for which child.

Application Process: The timing of each school’s admissions cycle, how it assesses English proficiency, and what it requires of applicants and their parents.

Special Education Needs: Consultants who are specialists in neurodiversity and work alongside our Tokyo experts, ensuring that a school can meet a child’s needs.

The Commuting Reality: Practical guidance on commute times and how to access a school from a particular area, be it by bus or train or car.

    International School Placement

We help you decide which of Tokyo’s international schools could be a fit for your child, we recommend schools with that particular child in mind, and we liaise directly with admissions teams on your behalf.

    Curriculum and Program Guidance

We advise on whether the IB, a British or American curriculum, or a national program is the best fit for your child, and how the choice fits into your longer-range planning.

    Returnee Family Guidance

For Japanese families returning from abroad, we help you think through how an international school, a Japanese school with returnee admissions, or a combination over time affects your child’s reentry into the Japanese system.

    Early Years and Preschool Placement

Tokyo offers a wide range of early-years settings, including Montessori and Reggio Emilia-inspired programs, bilingual preschools and the kindergarten sections of the international schools. We help you understand the options and the timing for each one.

    Special Education Needs Support

Support for students who have additional learning needs varies considerably across Tokyo’s international schools. A small number of schools specialize in learning differences. When considering a neurodiverse student for admission, most schools will ask to see testing and assessments in order to be sure that they can provide appropriate support. When placing a child with additional needs, our consultant works alongside a Bennett SEN specialist, reviewing your child’s testing and evaluations and recommending schools whose resources meet your child’s needs.

    Application and Enrollment Support

Applications to Tokyo’s established schools can open many months ahead of an August start, and students are typically asked to provide school records, recommendations and, often, evidence that a parent is fluent in English. We help you understand all of the requirements and liaise with Admissions on your behalf throughout the process.

    Mid-Year and Off-Cycle Arrival Support

Arriving in the spring, or partway through the year? Some schools consider applicants throughout the year when places allow, while others limit when new students can join. This is where knowing the admissions teams matters, and we help with all of it, regardless of the time of year.

    University Counseling

Many families arrive in Tokyo with a child who will go on to university in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan or elsewhere. We help students understand the route to each, since the longer-range plan often determines school choice in the immediate term.

    Education Advisory Session

A focused, one-hour consultation for families with specific questions about schooling in Tokyo. Fees can be credited toward a comprehensive placement engagement.

Every service is customized to your family’s situation, timeline, and goals.

      Your Questions Answered

      Tokyo International Schools, Explained

Moving into an unfamiliar school system raises the same questions again and again. Here are the ones families ask us most often about Tokyo.

Can my child go to a Japanese public school in Tokyo?

Yes. Japanese public elementary and junior high schools accept foreign children free of charge, on the same terms as Japanese children, although families of foreign nationality are not required to enroll them. Classes are taught in Japanese and the school year runs from April to March, so for a child arriving without Japanese, most relocating families choose an international school. Families staying long term, or whose children already speak Japanese, are in a different position and worth talking through individually.

Yes, but it is worth understanding the consequences first. Most international schools in Japan are not recognized as regular schools under Japan’s School Education Act, so for a child of Japanese nationality, attending one does not count toward compulsory education, and a child who completes elementary school at one is generally not admitted to a Japanese public middle school afterward. Routes back exist later on: high school entry may require an equivalency exam, and graduates of internationally accredited schools, or holders of the IB Diploma and similar qualifications, are eligible to apply to Japanese universities. Many Japanese schools also run dedicated admissions for returnee students (kikokushijo), and some international schools set conditions of their own, such as a parent who is fluent in English. Rules can vary by ward, so speak with your local board of education before enrolling; we can help you weigh the options.

Japanese schools run from April to March. Most international schools in Tokyo run from August or September to June, though a few follow the April calendar. Applications to the established international schools often open in the autumn for the following August, and decisions can continue from late winter into the summer, so the earlier you begin, the more choice you have.

It depends on the school, the year group and the timing. Places at the established schools near the most popular residential areas can be limited, and some schools keep a waiting pool rather than admitting everyone who qualifies. Many also ask something of the parents: at several established schools at least one parent must be fluent in English. Applying early, and to more than one school, is the most reliable approach, and knowing which schools have room in which year groups is a large part of what we do.

The International Baccalaureate, the British national curriculum and the American curriculum are the most common, and there are national programs too, including French, Canadian and Indian ones; the German school for the region is in Yokohama. The IB has grown quickly in Japan, which now has more than 270 IB programs authorized or in candidacy, including a Diploma Programme that some Japanese schools teach largely in Japanese. Which curriculum suits your child depends as much on your family’s next move as on the school itself.

As in most major cities, international school fees in Tokyo are significant. At the established schools, annual tuition for 2026-27 generally runs from about ¥2 million to almost ¥4 million, and the first year costs more because of one-off registration and building fees, which at some schools exceed ¥1 million. Fees vary widely beyond that range, and we help families understand the full cost of each school they are considering.

It varies considerably. Some Tokyo international schools offer learning support for mild needs, often only up to a certain grade, and many ask families to disclose any assessments when they apply. A small number of schools specialize in learning differences, with small classes and therapists on staff. Because provision differs so much from school to school, this is a conversation to have early. We place children with additional needs in Tokyo, with our consultant working alongside a Bennett SEN specialist, and we will tell you plainly what is and is not available before you commit.

Many families arrive with a clear picture of living in central Tokyo, and that is understandable. But the international schools are spread widely across the greater metropolitan area, so settling the school before signing the lease is usually the order that works. Once the school is chosen, look at neighborhoods within an easy journey of it, or along its school bus routes where it runs them. Many schools offer only limited bus service, or none, so check rather than assume; Tokyo’s public transport is safe and reliable, many students use it, and older students often commute on their own.
