Education Support in Sydney

Choosing Your Child's Best-Fit School with a Trusted Education Consultant in Sydney

Excellent public and private schools in many different suburbs, a school year that starts in late January, and a home address that matters more than most families expect.

Sydney has many excellent public and private schools spread across many different suburbs, and most relocating families weigh a government school in their local area against an independent or Catholic school. Some also look at schools that offer the International Baccalaureate, or at the city’s French, German and Japanese schools. Our Sydney education consultants help families understand those choices and find the school that fits their child.

Two things surprise many families. The first is the address: a place at a government school depends on living in that school’s intake area, so the school decision and the housing decision are made hand in hand. The second is the calendar. Australia’s school year runs from late January or early February to December, so most families arriving from the Northern Hemisphere join partway through a school year.

Whether you are weighing a public school against an independent one, working out which suburbs make the most sense for you, or planning your child’s senior years around the HSC or the IB, our consultants in Sydney turn the options into clear next steps.

    How We Help

The Question Behind Every Sydney School Search

Should My Child Go to a Public or Private School in Sydney?

For many years, the Lower North Shore and the Eastern Suburbs have been the areas relocating families choose most often. With Sydney’s rental market as tight as it is, more families now also look at the Upper North Shore and the Northern Beaches, which combine international communities, strong schools, transport and access to the city center. Wherever families look, the school decision and the housing decision tend to be made together.

The good news is that Sydney has many excellent public and private schools in many different suburbs. Government schools take every child who lives in their intake area; independent and Catholic schools set their own admissions, and the most sought-after keep long waiting lists. As is the case in every city, the best-known schools are not automatically the best fit for every child, and knowing how to make a good match is extremely important.

That local reality is exactly what our Sydney education consultants help families work through every week.

Here are the considerations that shape most decisions:

A Public School Place Starts With Your Address

Every child is entitled to a place at the government school for their home address, known as its intake area. A family choosing a public school therefore needs to secure a home first, usually with a lease, before the school can enroll their child, and schools that are close to capacity check addresses carefully. For many Sydney families, choosing a suburb is the first school decision they make.

Families on Temporary Visas Pay Public School Fees

Children of families on temporary visas, including the 482 skilled visa, pay an annual fee to attend a NSW government school: A$6,400 from Kindergarten to Year 10 and A$7,600 in Years 11 and 12 in 2026, rising slightly in 2027. Families apply through the NSW Department of Education’s international office once they have a Sydney address. Victoria, by contrast, doesn’t charge these families tuition at its government schools.

Independent School Places Depend on the Year Level

Sydney’s best-known independent schools keep waiting lists that local families join years in advance, so a family arriving with a few months’ notice is often placed on a list. There are many other good independent schools, though, and entry is generally easier in the early primary years than in Year 6 or in the final two years of high school. Being clear about what matters to your family, and applying to more than one school, helps.

The School Year Starts in Late January

Australia’s school year runs from late January or early February to mid-December, in four terms with two-week breaks between them and a summer holiday of about six weeks. Year level is based mainly on a child’s age, and the principal makes the final decision after looking at the child’s previous schooling. Where a family has a choice, starting in Term 4, the last term of the year, is usually best avoided.

Kindergarten Is the First Year of School

In Sydney, preschool is the year or two before school and Kindergarten is the first year of primary school, which is the reverse of how the words are used in Victoria and Queensland. A child can start Kindergarten if they turn five on or before 31 July that year and must be at school by their sixth birthday, so children in the same class can be well over a year apart in age.

Getting to School Is Part of Daily Life

Most Sydney students travel to school by public transport, on foot or by car. Dedicated school bus services run on many routes and some private schools run their own, and a state scheme gives many students free travel to school, so it is worth checking what your visa allows. Living near the school, or along a direct route to it, makes the school day much easier for everyone.

    Inside the Sydney System

Education Consultants Who Know Sydney Schools

Our Sydney education consultants know the schools of interest to incoming families: which have earned their reputation, which will best support a child who is new to the Australian curriculum, which are known for academic rigor, and where the quieter campuses are that families never hear about in a first search. They take the time to understand who your child is and what kind of school you’re looking for, and they recommend schools they believe will be a fit for your child; their starting point is your child, not a list of school names. What they contribute to your school search:

School Fluency: Extensive knowledge of Sydney’s government, Catholic and independent schools, what each one offers, and whether it teaches the HSC, the IB Diploma or both.

School Relationships: Professional relationships with admissions teams at independent, Catholic and international schools across the city, and an understanding of which school will be a good fit for a specific student.

Admissions Know-How: The ability to support your application process with complete applications, professional interview preparation and advice on waiting lists and entry years.

Special Education Needs Expertise: Consultants who are specialists in neurodiversity and work alongside our Sydney experts, ensuring that a school can meet a child’s needs.

Intake Area Insight: Practical guidance on which suburbs fall within the intake area of a school you like, so the school and the housing decisions can be made together.

Because Bennett is fully independent and never affiliated with any school, our advice stays focused on one thing: where your child will do well.

    Our Sydney Services

Support at Every Stage, from Preschool to University

From helping you choose a first preschool to guiding you through university applications, our Sydney consultants support your family at every stage. Every service is customized to your family’s situation, timeline and goals.

    Independent and Catholic School Placement

We help you decide which of Sydney’s independent and Catholic schools could be a fit for your child; we recommend schools with your particular child in mind, and we liaise directly with admissions teams on your behalf.

Public School and Intake Area Guidance

If a government school is the right choice, we explain how intake areas work, what families on temporary visas need to arrange before enrolling, and which suburbs put a school you like within reach, so you can look for a home with the school in mind.

    HSC and IB Diploma Guidance

For students in the senior years, we help families weigh the HSC against the IB Diploma, thinking about how long you expect to stay in Australia, where your child may go to university, and what kind of learner your child is.

    Early Years and Preschool Placement

We help you understand the options for children under five, from public and community preschools to long day care, explain how the Kindergarten starting age works, and suggest when to start contacting centers, since places for some age groups fill early.

    Special Education Needs Support

Every Australian school must make reasonable adjustments for a student with a disability, but how support is resourced varies from school to school. When placing a neurodiverse child, we pair our consultant with a Bennett SEN expert, review the reports you already have, and recommend schools whose support fits your child’s needs.

    Application and Enrollment Support

Each school has its own application requirements and timing. We explain what each school asks for, help you prepare complete applications and get ready for interviews, and advise on registration fees, waiting lists and backup options.

    Mid-Year and Off-Cycle Arrival Support

Arriving in July, or in October? Because the school year starts in late January, most families from the Northern Hemisphere arrive partway through it. We help you think through the right year level and the right moment to start, and look for schools with space in your child’s year group.

    University Counseling

Many families arrive in Sydney with a child who will go on to university in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or elsewhere. We help students understand the route to each option, since the longer-range plan often determines school choice in the immediate term.

    Education Advisory Session

A focused, one-hour consultation for families with specific questions about schooling in Sydney. Fees can be credited toward a comprehensive placement engagement.

Every service is customized to your family’s situation, timeline, and goals.

      Your Questions Answered

      Sydney Schools, Explained

Moving into an unfamiliar school system raises the same questions again and again. Here are the ones families ask us most often about Sydney.

Should my child go to a public or private school in Sydney?

It depends on your child, how long you expect to stay and where you can live. Sydney has many excellent government schools, and a place at one comes with an address in its intake area. Independent and Catholic schools set their own admissions and charge fees, and the most sought-after have long waiting lists. Many families with primary-age children choose a home within a well-regarded public school’s intake area, while families with teenagers more often look at independent schools that offer the IB. A consultant can help you weigh both for your child.

Yes. Children of most temporary visa holders, including the 482 skilled visa, pay an annual tuition fee to attend a NSW government school through the Temporary Residents Program. For 2026 the fee is A$6,400 a year from Kindergarten to Year 10 and A$7,600 in Years 11 and 12, plus a A$150 application fee, and the 2027 fees are slightly higher. Families apply to the Department of Education’s international office once they have an address. Victoria does not charge these families tuition at its government schools. Read more in Enrolling in a Sydney Public School on a 482 Visa.

First find a home in the intake area of the school you want, since every child is entitled to a place at the government school for their address. Schools ask for proof of address, such as a lease, and schools close to capacity check it carefully. Families on temporary visas then apply to the Department of Education’s international office, which issues an authority to enroll before the school can accept the child.

At the most sought-after independent schools, local families often register years in advance, so a family arriving with a few months’ notice is usually placed on a waiting list. Many other good independent schools have space, particularly in the early primary years. If you are set on one school, register and join its list, but keep looking at others in the meantime. Sydney Private School Waiting Lists explains more.

A child can start Kindergarten, the first year of primary school in New South Wales, if they turn five on or before 31 July of that year, and every child must be enrolled by their sixth birthday. Preschool is the year or two before that. In Victoria and Queensland the words are used differently: kindergarten comes before school and the first year of school is called Prep. Starting School in Sydney has the details.

Age is the usual starting point, and the principal makes the final decision after looking at your child’s previous schooling, readiness and support needs. Because the Australian school year starts in late January, a child arriving from the Northern Hemisphere usually joins partway through a year level, and the school will often meet with you to agree on the best placement. Moving to Australia Mid-Year explains how it works.

Both are respected by universities in Australia and overseas. The IB Diploma suits students who may move again and who enjoy a broad range of subjects and independent research; the HSC suits students who want to focus on their strongest subjects and have a clear direction. A student’s subjects, results and university prerequisites matter more than which qualification they take. Several Sydney schools offer the IB Diploma alongside the HSC. HSC or IB Diploma in Sydney? goes further.

In late January or early February. NSW government schools run four terms, with a two-week break between each and a summer holiday of about six weeks from mid-December. For 2027, students return to NSW government schools on 3 February. Independent schools set their own dates, which are usually similar.
