For Families Leaving the United States

Leaving the US with school-age children? Choose the school before you choose your house.

Wherever you are considering, we’ll tell you about the school options there for your children, and how their education would look.

Families who are leaving the US and deciding where they would like to live need to be certain that their new home country will have appropriate schooling for their kids. Sometimes they don’t know what they don’t know about another country’s education system, and it’s important to complete the research well ahead of time. Maybe the school year starts at a different time of year from what they expect. Maybe they plan to use local schools but don’t realize that their child has missed a critical exam that will determine placement. Maybe the English-language schools are full, or an hour away, or cost three times what they thought.

Those details are knowable now, before a lease is signed or a visa request is filed. Bennett’s consultants have placed American families in schools around the world for over 35 years, and our consultants live in many of the places you are considering.

We can explain what education looks like for your children in each of them, and then help you secure school spots once you have decided where you’re going.

The Part of the Plan That Decides the Rest

When Your Children Thrive, You Thrive

Why the School Question Comes Before the Destination Question

For a family moving abroad, the school is rarely a detail to sort out after arrival. It’s a huge part of any move and determines much of the “when” and “where” of the whole relocation puzzle: which city, which neighborhood, which month, and, sometimes, which country.

Families come to us at different points in their decision-making journey, and with all kinds of questions. Some are still deciding between countries and want to compare the education options in each one. Some have chosen a destination and need someone to guide them through selecting and applying to the right schools. Those with a child who is not neuro-typical have an additional list of questions, and want to understand if and how their child will be well supported in the locations they’re considering.

None of these situations is a reason to hesitate. Each is a reason to begin the adventure by focusing on your child’s education, and once the answers to a few questions are in hand, the rest of the plan tends to fall into place.

Here are the questions families ask us most often, and why each matters more than it first appears.

Which Schools Teach in English?

In most countries the international schools do, and the local schools do not, which may make the list of realistic options shorter than a family expects.

When Does the School Year Start?

August or September in much of Europe. January or February in Australia, New Zealand and parts of South America. A move planned for June can mean a child arriving mid-school-year in one country and before the start of a school year in another.

How Will My Child Be Placed, and in Which Year Group?

This depends a lot on the country, the curriculum, and the school itself. Many countries have age requirements for the start of state-provided education, and many have required exams at particular stages that determine a student’s later placement. We can explain all of this.

Will the Support My Child Has Now Exist There?

An IEP or 504 plan does not transfer. What transfers is the information in it, and whether a school can act on it depends on the school. This is a question we are asked often, and one where local knowledge matters most.

What Will It Cost?

International school fees vary widely by country and by school, and the published figure is often not the whole figure. Knowing the likely cost in each place you are considering is part of choosing between them.

Can We Arrive Mid-Year?

Often, yes. Many international schools accept students year-round if they have space, and space is the deciding factor. International schools also tend to operate on a US or “northern hemisphere” school calendar, which can make it easier for students coming from the US to transition.

How We Help Families

What Working With Us Looks Like

Every engagement begins the same way: a detailed conversation about your family, your children, and where you are in the decision journey. From there, we shape the work around what you need.

Choosing Between Countries

We take your shortlist of countries and explain what the options would be in each one: the types of schools available, the academic calendar, the placement process, the cost range, and more. Many families find this narrows the decision to one or two destinations in a single conversation.

Curriculum and Timing Discussion

Depending on the kinds of schools you’re considering, we’ll explain curriculum, natural and difficult entry points, exam years and school culture. We’ll provide not just information, but wisdom.

School Search and Placement

Once you decide on a destination, our consultant supports you on the next step of the journey, guiding you to child-appropriate schools and helping with the application process. They research and shortlist schools for each child, contact admissions offices directly, coordinate school visits for you, and stay with you until your children are enrolled.

Support for Children With Additional Needs

Our specialists review your child’s evaluations, testing and support plans, identify the schools in your destination that can meet those needs, speak with their learning support teams, and represent your child through the admissions process.

Long-Range Planning

We know that families who are moving are thinking not only about the school their child will attend in their new home, but also about what comes next. If you’re thinking ahead to an eventual return to the US, or to college or university, we can help you plan for that, too.

The First Conversation

A conversation with a senior consultant about your family, your destination, and your timeline. We tell you what schooling looks like in each place you are considering, what would be involved, and how we work. Bennett works with families on a fee basis, and we will explain our pricing in this first conversation, before any commitment.

Asked and Answered

Moving Abroad With Children, Explained

The questions below are the ones families leaving the US ask us most often. The answers are general by design; the conversation is where they become specific to your children.

What does an education consultant add to a school search we could do ourselves?

Information about schools is freely available today, and most families come to us having read a great deal. What they still need is real guidance: a distillation of information by experts who know schools, who understand kids, and who have worked with scores of relocating families.

Yes. Bennett places students from preschool through Grade 12, and our college consulting team supports students applying to universities in the US and abroad. For a family leaving the US with a high schooler, that often means planning both at once: a school that fits now, and a route to college that holds up wherever you land.

In most countries, yes, and for younger children, immersion in the local language can work very well. For older students, language requirements and a national exam system may point families toward an international school. We talk you through both routes and tell you which is realistic for each child.

Provisions likely exist in most of the places you’re considering, but they may be different from what your child currently benefits from in the US. Some international schools provide substantial learning support; others offer very little. Our SEN experts review your child’s evaluations and plans and identify the schools that can act on them.

Often, yes. Many international schools accept students year-round when they have space, and space is the deciding factor.

Earlier than most families expect, and it is never too early to have the first conversation. Competitive international schools can have waiting lists, and some countries’ admissions windows close many months ahead of the school year. If a move is a year or more away, starting now gives you the most choice.

Yes. Bennett works with families on a fee basis, and we will explain our pricing in our first conversation, before any commitment. The first step is a conversation about your family and where you are in the decision, so that we can tell you what would be involved.
