School Assessments

Independent School Assessments for Global Mobility and HR Teams

Is the school “sufficient”? Are the barriers to the local system real? Does this child truly need private school? When a decision about schooling carries real cost for your company and your employees, Bennett gives you an independent assessment to base it on.

When to Assess

When Companies Ask Us to Assess

We assess schools, school systems and education systems for clients for a range of reasons. Usually, there’s a budget question underneath the request.

Employees Question a School

Many of your employees use one school in a location where options are limited, and they’re unhappy with the quality. Some would prefer boarding school. Is the school “sufficient”?

Policy Says Local Schools; Families Disagree

Your policy expects employees in a region to use public schools, but families are pushing back. Are their concerns valid, and should there be a private school allowance?

Barriers to the Local System

Your policy doesn’t support international school in a location, but the local system has barriers to entry, such as priority for citizens or entrance exams. How real are they, and do they warrant a different approach?

An Exception Request

An employee asks for an exception because their child “needs” private school to stay on track for the return home, or for another reason. How should you respond?

A School Change for a Community

The school your employees’ families rely on is closing or changing, and families are worried. A third-party assessment shows you’re taking it seriously and gives everyone accurate information.

Online and Distance Learning

Online schools and learning programs need vetting as much as bricks-and-mortar schools: what’s accredited, what the curriculum really looks like, and how much teacher access a student has.

Sometimes an assessment comes before a policy is set, as part of planning a group move. Sometimes it comes after, when employees push back. And sometimes it’s part of the policy itself, to determine which children truly need an exception and which requests reflect a family’s preference. An independent school assessment gives you a clear answer either way.

What We Assess

Assessments at Three Levels

Some assessments look at an entire education system for a cohort of students. Others look at a single school, or at one child’s situation. Each ends with a recommendation you can act on.

Level 1

Assessing an Education System

When a company needs to know whether relocating children can realistically step into a local system, or whether that system will prepare them for the one they’ll return to, we assess the system as a whole. When families from one U.S. school district worried that a local system abroad would leave their children behind, for example, we compared the local schools and curriculum with their home district. Our recommendation was split: the local schools were fine, and older students would benefit from specific additional support, such as college counseling and tutoring in subjects from the home curriculum.

What we look at

  • Admissions rules and barriers to entry for non-citizens
  • Curriculum, language of instruction and calendar, compared with the system children come from and will return to
  • How the system serves children at different ages and grade levels
  • Support for students who are still learning the language of instruction
  • Resources for students with special education needs
Level 2

Assessing a School

When employees question the quality of a particular school, or when your policy turns on whether a school is “sufficient,” we visit and assess it. We compare what a school says it offers with what it actually provides, and we look at who it’s designed for. The term “international” has never been patented, and some schools that carry it serve almost entirely local students.

What we look at

  • Curriculum, teaching and how teachers are recruited
  • Who the school is designed for, and its student population
  • Pastoral care and counseling
  • Support for language learners and students with special education needs
  • How well the school would prepare students for the system they’ll return to
  • Accreditation, for schools and for online programs
Level 3

Assessing an Individual Student’s Situation

When an employee requests an exception to policy, we interview the family and look at the individual child: the languages they speak, their age, where they’re being asked to move, and where they’re expected to go home to, and when. Our recommendations can differ completely from one employee’s child to the next, and they don’t always come down to private school or not. For one family planning to return to their home country, neither school offered the home language, so we recommended home-language tutoring rather than private school fees.

What we consider

  • Why the family believes private school is necessary
  • The child’s age, languages and current curriculum
  • The destination’s school options for this child
  • Where and when the family expects to return, and what re-entry will require
  • Targeted alternatives, such as tutoring or home-language maintenance

How It Works

How a School Assessment Works

Every assessment starts with the decision you need to make. Companies often come to us asking for an assessment of a school or a system, and our first question is always: what problem are you trying to solve?

  1. We define the questionWe learn about your policy, the employees and children involved, and the decision the assessment needs to support.
  2. We research and, where needed, visitWe research the schools or system in question, interview families where appropriate, and visit schools in person when the decision calls for it.
  3. We make a recommendationYou receive our findings and a clear recommendation, with the reasoning behind it. Sometimes it’s a split recommendation, with targeted support in place of a costlier option.
  4. We can share it with employeesWhere it helps, we present findings to families directly: a school’s strengths, what will be different, and what your company is doing to help with the transition.

When the school a whole community relies on is changing, we can also advise you on what to ask of the school in return for the students you’ll bring it, such as a counselor or particular hiring standards for teachers.

Exception Requests

Consistent Answers to Exception Requests

Many of our clients’ policies say that the children of employees on assignment use local schools, unless an independent assessment finds that private school is necessary for a particular child. Sending every request to the same third party brings consistency, and HR and Global Mobility aren’t left deciding each family’s case themselves.

Consistent Reasoning

Because the same independent team considers every request, employees in different locations receive recommendations based on the same reasoning.

Needs, Not Preferences

Many families feel strongly that their child needs private school. An assessment separates what a particular child needs from what a family would prefer.

Support That Fits

When private school isn’t necessary, we often recommend targeted support instead, such as tutoring or home-language maintenance, so the child still gets what they need.

Exception requests are also one of the five areas of our education benefits policy consulting, if you’d like help writing a protocol for them.

    FAQs

    School Assessments, Explained

    What is a school assessment?

It’s an independent evaluation, for an employer, of whether a school, a local education system or an online program will meet the needs of relocating employees’ children. It ends in a recommendation the company can act on.

Before a policy is set, often as part of planning a group move; after a policy is set, when employees push back on the schools available; and as part of a policy, to decide individual exception requests.

When the decision calls for it, yes. A visit lets us compare what a school says it offers with what it actually provides.

Yes. We interview the family, look at the individual child, and recommend whether private school is necessary, or whether targeted support, such as tutoring, would meet the child’s needs.

Yes. Our job is to give you an accurate, independent picture, whichever way it points. Bennett is never paid by schools, and our assessments are never influenced by referral fees.

Yes. We look at accreditation, what the curriculum really looks like, how much access students have to teachers, and how much of the learning a student does alone.

It depends on the school. The term “international” has never been patented, and some schools that use it serve almost entirely local students, sometimes as a bridge to Western education later on. Understanding who a school is designed for is part of every assessment we do.

Yes. A third-party assessment shows families you’re taking the change seriously, gives them accurate information about the school they’re moving to, and identifies what that school could improve, which you can raise with it when you bring it a group of students.
