Group Move Consulting

Group Move Education Consulting for Global Mobility and HR Teams

When a company relocates a cohort of employees, schooling shapes the budget, the timeline and who says yes to the move. Bennett researches the education landscape before you announce a group move, helps you present it to your employees, and supports the families who go.

The Challenge

Where Group Moves Get Complicated

Schooling is usually one of the first questions employees ask when they hear about a group move. The answers depend on research that’s best done well before the announcement, because what it finds can change the budget, the timing and the offers you make.

Assumptions About Local Schools

A budget that relies on local schools works only if the incoming children can enroll in them. In some destinations, the local system gives priority to citizens and permanent residents, or sets entrance exams a newly arrived child can’t realistically sit.

Space in Schools

International schools in popular destinations can be full, with waiting lists by grade. Families who arrive without school places can spend their first months looking for them, and solving that after the fact is harder than planning for it.

Special Education Needs

Speech therapists, occupational therapists and learning specialists may be scarce in a destination, or unavailable in a child’s language. What’s available can shape hiring decisions, offers and the timing of a move.

Who a School Is Designed For

The term “international” has never been patented. A school that carries it may have been founded mostly for local students, which matters when you’re counting on it for a cohort of relocating children.

The sooner you bring us in, the more options you have. Depending on the location, schooling may need problem solving a year before anyone moves. Front-load the education research, and you’ll know what your budget, timeline and offers need to account for.

How We Help

Three Stages of Group Move Support

Group moves tend to unfold in three stages: the decisions HR and Global Mobility make before employees are brought into the conversation, the way the move is presented to employees deciding whether to accept it, and the support families receive as they relocate. We can help at any or all of them.

Stage 1

Research Before the Announcement

Before you bring employees into the conversation, we research the education landscape for the cohort you’re moving: who’s going, how many children, and what you know about them, even if they’re still unknowns. We bring what we find back to HR and Global Mobility, because it affects many of your decisions: your policy on private or international school, your hiring and offers, and the timing of the move.

Topics we research with you

  • An education landscape assessment of the destination for your cohort of students
  • Whether there’s a good international school, and who it’s actually designed for
  • If there’s no international school, the viability of local schools for your employees’ children
  • Space in schools for the number of children you expect, by grade
  • Resources for children with special education needs, such as therapists who speak the child’s language
  • Whether to support private or international school tuition, decided before the move is announced
  • Admissions timelines and school calendars, set against the date of the move
Stage 2

Presenting the Move to Employees

Once your decisions are made, the first questions employees ask are usually about schooling. We help you answer them before families decide whether to accept the relocation, in whatever format suits your company and the size of the move.

Ways we can help you inform employees

  • Presenting at relocation fairs, where employees meet the providers for their move in one place, and speaking with families one on one
  • Live or prerecorded webinars, with time for questions
  • Education overviews and school guidebooks written for your employees
  • A copy of the education landscape assessment for each family, so they can orient themselves before they decide
Stage 3

Supporting the Families Who Go

Companies approach this stage differently, depending on their policy and the move. Every family might receive a copy of the education landscape assessment. Families with a neurodiverse child might receive a level of support others don’t. Senior executives might receive white-glove support. We customize our services to the location, the nature of the move, the number of people and their level.

Support we can provide

  • A one-hour consultation for every family, often paired with webinars
  • Full school placement support, from the school search through admissions
  • Placement support for students with special education needs
  • White-glove support for senior executives and their families
  • Repatriation planning for families who will return home

Education Landscape Assessments

What’s in an Education Landscape Assessment

An education landscape assessment (ELA) is a report, written for your company and your employees, on the schooling available to the children you’re moving. We always start by asking what you’ll use it for. An ELA written as a roadmap for families reads differently from one written to answer a budget question, such as whether your company should pay for international school.

  • A high-level overview of the area and its schools
  • International and private schools, and who they’re designed for
  • Local public schools, where appropriate, with sample school districts in larger areas
  • Requirements for registering in a local school
  • Curriculum, language of instruction and school calendars
  • Admissions processes and timing for private and international schools
  • Resources for students with special education needs
  • Preschool options, if your policy supports preschool
  • Language support programs, for children still learning the language of instruction

Its size and depth depend on the location and your needs. A report on a large metropolitan area covers far more ground than one on a city with a handful of international schools. Much of the information exists online, but research done with your policy and your employees in mind asks the questions you may not think to ask. For a cohort of children who don’t yet speak English, for example, the quality of a public school’s English language support matters as much as its reputation.

Remote Locations

When Good Options Are Scarce

Some assignments take families to places with little education infrastructure for incoming children, often in the energy and mining sectors. There may be no true international school, and the local schools may not be a realistic option. Clients rarely ask us for a “remote location solution.” They describe a situation, and we help them think it through.

Is It Realistic to Bring Children?

Sometimes the first question is whether families should relocate with school-age children at all, and what your policy offers students of different ages, such as boarding school.

Hybrid Models

Where a location allows it, we look at whether a hybrid of local schooling and a supervised online program could work for a group of students.

Vetting Online Programs

Online schools and learning programs need the same scrutiny as bricks-and-mortar schools: accreditation, curriculum, teacher access, and how alone a student is in their learning.

Students with Additional Needs

What support a child with special education needs could receive in the location, and what that means for the family’s decision and your planning.

We look at where families are going, your policy to date and what might be possible locally, so you can decide with the full picture. Read more about schooling for families on remote assignments.

    FAQs

    Group Move Education Consulting, Explained

What is group move education consulting?

It’s education support for a company relocating a group of employees with children. Bennett researches the schooling available in the destination, advises HR and Global Mobility on the decisions that follow, helps present the move to employees, and supports the families who relocate.

As early as you can, ideally before the move is announced to employees. Depending on the location, schooling may need problem solving a year out. In many cities, private school applications happen in the fall for the following September, and school places, costs and special education resources all need to be understood before you set budgets and make offers.

It’s a report on the schooling available to the children you’re moving, written with your policy and your employees in mind. It can cover international, private and local public schools, admissions timing, curriculum and calendars, preschool, and resources for students with special education needs. Its depth depends on the location and on what you’ll use it for.

Often, yes. A local-schools plan holds only if incoming children can enroll and do well there, and in some destinations there are real barriers to entry, such as priority for citizens or entrance exams. Learning that before the budget is set costs far less than learning it after families have moved. Our school assessments look at whether a local system is realistic for a cohort.

Yes. We present at relocation fairs and speak with families one on one, run live or prerecorded webinars with time for questions, and write education overviews and school guidebooks for your employees.

That’s your decision. Some companies give every family the education landscape assessment; others add a webinar and a one-hour consultation for each family; others provide full placement support, or additional support for families with a neurodiverse child. We customize to the location, the move and the people involved.

We help you think through what’s realistic: whether to bring children at all, boarding options for older students where your policy allows, online programs we’ve vetted, and, where a location makes it possible, a hybrid of local and online learning.

Yes. We work with employers directly and alongside relocation management companies, so the education piece of a group move fits with the rest of the relocation.
