New York School Admissions: What Has Changed for 2027-28

New York gives families more school choices than almost anywhere, and a calendar that opens earlier than most expect. Here is what has changed heading into the 2027-28 admissions cycle, so you can plan your family’s search with confidence.

Families arriving in New York are rarely short of information. What tends to catch them out is timing, and the fact that the city’s two systems use different names for the same school year.

The Two Calendars, and Why They Sound Contradictory

Public schools call the round that opens this fall the 2027-28 application. Independent schools call the same round the 2026-27 admissions season. Both mean entry in September 2027. A family reading two guides side by side can reasonably conclude they have missed something, when the two systems have simply named the same year differently.

There is a second distinction worth drawing early. A child who needs a desk this month is not in that round at all. Arriving mid-year is a separate process, and a more straightforward one, which we come to below.

The SHSAT Becomes Computer-Adaptive

The most substantial change this cycle affects the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test. Beginning with the fall 2026 administration, for 2027-28 entry, the SHSAT becomes a computer-adaptive test.

Two details matter in practice. Students cannot revisit questions or move around within a section and must answer to advance, with an exception for questions inside a reading passage set. And the way the exam is scored is unchanged, which is worth knowing because adaptive testing leads families to assume the scoring changed too. Registration opens on October 6 and closes on October 30, 2026. At the time of writing, the test dates themselves had not been published.

Gifted & Talented No Longer Has an Entrance Test

The screening exam for four-year-olds is gone. Entry now runs on teacher nomination at kindergarten, and on report card grades in grades one through four.

For a relocating family, one step is easy to miss. Children coming from a private, charter or home-school setting submit report cards to a Family Welcome Center, which converts them to the city’s four-point scale. It is a small administrative step with a real deadline attached, and nothing prompts you to do it.

The Independent Round Is Earlier Than It Looks

Independent schools release their applications on their own timetables, and some open as early as August 1. A school may close applications on volume before any published deadline arrives, which means a family that waits until they have landed and unpacked can find a door already shut.

From there the calendar tightens. Applications are completed by January 8, 2027, kindergarten decisions arrive on February 4 with replies due February 11, and the older grades follow through February into March. Those reply windows run about a week, and they are binding. Attending a school’s own admissions events counts as a signal of interest, and families arriving from overseas often miss that season without realizing it registers.

Two Changes Families Still Have Not Caught Up With

The cap of twelve schools on a high school application has been removed, so a student may now rank as many programs as they wish. And middle school choice is citywide rather than district-bound, while zone and district priority still apply where a school uses them.

It is also worth separating three things that often get blurred. A zoned school is a geographic entitlement, subject to available seats. A screened school ranks applicants on academic record. A citywide school is open to all five boroughs with no geographic priority. The screening tiers are re-set every year, so last year’s cut-off tells you very little about this one.

Arriving Mid-Year

This is where New York is more generous than its reputation. A child who appears at a school or a Family Welcome Center seeking enrollment must have a placement arranged within five school days, and by the next school day where possible. Documentation of immigration status is not required, and children can start while immunization records or grade placement are still being resolved.

It is also worth holding on to the overall picture. Roughly 96 percent of high school applicants receive an offer from a school they listed. The system is large and it is intricate, but it does place children.
